ALPINE – A 37-year-old Alpine resident was lethally struck by a vehicle driven by a Marathon woman late Sunday night, leading to the arrest of two Marathon residents.
According to the Alpine Police Department Facebook page, police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of North 17th Street at around 1:15am Sunday following reports of a hit-and-run. At the scene, officers found Aquiles Armendariz Gonzales suffering from severe trauma consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Gonzales was transported to the Big Bend Regional Medical Center, where he passed away shortly after arriving at the trauma unit.
Witnesses to the hit-and-run described the vehicle that struck Gonzales as a 2012 GMC Acadia driven by Lisette McGuire.
A passenger, Jon Jay Whitley, was also reported to be travelling with McGuire at the time of the incident.
McGuire, APD Lieutenant Felipe Fierro confirmed, is the mother of Gonzales’ child.
McGuire and Whitley were later taken into custody by Brewster County Sheriff’s Office deputies in Marathon.
McGuire is charged with first degree felony murder, and Whitley with a Class A misdemeanor charge of failing to report a felony.
Though a verbal confrontation between the deceased and the suspects has been confirmed, Lt. Fierro said, there is no evidence of an assault taking place before Gonzales was struck by the vehicle.
The incident, he added, is still under investigation.
McGuire’s bail was set at $150,000 and Whitley’s bail was set at $4,000, both by Brewster County Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Gilbert Valenzuela.
Both Marathon residents are free on bond.
