PHS folkloric dancer a participant
MARFA — More than 2,100 youth from across the state, attended Texas 4-H Roundup June 11-14, 2018, in Bryan-College Station.
“Roundup is the pinnacle annual event for all of Texas 4-H and we welcomed more than 2,100 youth to compete in approximately 50 diverse competitions throughout the week,” said Dr. Courtney Dodd, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service assistant agency director and Texas 4 – H Youth Development program leader, College Station.
Presidio County 4-H would like to salute its eight 4-Hers for their outstanding performance in five events at Texas 4-H Roundup.
Presidio High School student Breeana Hernandez placed 7th in Share-the-Fun Choreographed Routine with her solo ballet folklorico routine. She is a member of the Grupo Folclórico Ratabáachi from Presidio. In competion, she danced to the music of the song La Bikina and did a dance and wore a costume from the state of Jalisco. The choreographed routine was coached by Presidio High School Counselor Rogelio Zubia.
Marfa students participating were Jacy Holguin in Photography Judging. Kathryn Hinojos and Levi Hinojos participated in Indoor Archery. Kathryn Hinojos placed 4th in the Senior Barebow class. Brielle Gonzales participated in the Share-the-Fun Vocal category. Levi Hinojos, Orly Holguin, Charlize Martinez, and Nathan Peña participated in Wildlife Challenge. Orly Holguin was the 10th place intermediate individual.
The archery team was coached by Terrie Wade, photography judging was coached by Reba Griggs, and the wildlife challenge teams were coached by Bo Hancock. Competitions such as these allow youth participants the opportunity to develop a mastery of their respective subject matters, but more importantly, gain life-long skills. Brielle Gonzales also represented Presidio County and the Far West Texas District as a State Council member. Texas 4-H Council is a team of 4-H members elected by their peers from across the state to represent one of the twelve AgriLife Extension Districts. They serve as ambassadors for the Texas 4-H program, and collaborate with Extension faculty to plan, coordinate and facilitate events and activities like Texas 4-H Roundup.
Marfa 4-H Club Manager, Griselda Hinojos was a recipient of the Salute to Excellence Award. This award recognizes outstanding 4-H volunteers for their service to the 4-H programs and the impact they have on the lives of young people in their community.
Texas 4-H Roundup, now in its 71st year, is held annually in June. This year’s theme of “ReCharge” was aimed at helping participants remember the importance of recharging themselves, even with limited spare time.
