A memorial Mass for Manuel Cortez Jimenez and Mary J. Jimenez will be celebrated at 1pm on Sunday, October 21 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shafter.

Interment of ashes will be held afterwards at the Shafter cemetery.

Mary Jimenez died on January 5, 2016 in El Paso and Manuel Cortez Jimenez died on June 25, 2018 in Galt, California.

Mary and Manuel were residents of Shafter for 32 years and they loved the small town. They had been married for 70 years at the time of Mary’s passing in 2016.

They always were known to open up their home to anyone and Mary would fix beans, rice and tortillas to anyone that was in need of a warm meal.

Manuel had a green thumb and he had a great garden in Shafter, where he would grow fruits and vegetables. He was well known to sell his fruits and vegetables to many residents and visitors. He also planted, grew and sold garlic. Manuel would also assist the hunters each year and spent countless hours visiting with them, sharing stories from the past.

Mary was well known throughout her life as a very kind and loving Mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

They had five children, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grand- children.

Their grandchildren would spend many summers in the beautiful town of Shafter and play in the creek near their trailer and enjoyed home-made ice cream. Many of their granddaughters were taught how to drive by Manuel and learned to cook with Mary.
