Presidio, Alpine students compete on Sul Ross rodeo team

ALPINE – The Sul Ross rodeo team, under the direction of new coach C.J. Aragon, is getting ready for their fourth rodeo this weekend, traveling to West Texas A&M in Amarillo.

Coach Aragon is pleased to have had team members placing at all three of the past rodeos.

The team has competed at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) in Portales, NM; Sul Ross State University; and Vernon College in Vernon. Aspyn Dent, from Durango, Colorado, took third in goat tying in Vernon. Brandon Lansford, Cotulla, placed at both ENMU and Sul Ross in saddle bronc, and Brooke Hester, Nixon, placed in breakaway roping at ENMU.

Area rodeo team members include two from Presidio and one from Alpine. Cesar Armendariz, a sophomore from Presidio, and Sesar Baeza, a freshman from Presidio, compete in team roping. Aspen Wash, a freshman from Alpine, competes in breakaway roping, goat tying, and team roping. This year’s Miss Rodeo Sul Ross 2018 is Jade Oates from Exeter, California. She has a strong passion for agriculture as well as horses and will graduate in May, 2019 with a bachelor’s of Animal Science with a concentration in Agriculture Education. She hopes to earn both a master’s and doctorate in equine science and become a collegiate level equine science professor.

The remaining fall schedule includes a rodeo at Texas Tech University- Lubbock on October 25-27. The spring 2019 schedule is:

Odessa College, Odessa, February 21-23, 2019 Ranger College, Sweetwater, March 21-23, 2019 Western Texas College- Snyder, April 4-6, 2019 Howard College, Big Spring, April 11-13, 2019 Tarleton State University- Stephenville, April 25-27, 2019

Seventeen colleges and universities are members in the Southwest Region Rodeo. Included are Claredon College, Cisco College,Eastern New Mexico University, Frank Phillips College, Howard College, New Mexico Junior College, North Central Texas College, Odessa College, Ranger College, South Plains College, Sul Ross State University, Tarleton State University, Texas Tech University-Lubbock, Vernon College, Weatherford College, West Texas A&M University, and Western Texas College.
