Presidio student athlete qualifies for state cross country meet

PRESIDIO – Presidio High School senior Ivett Ramos has qualified to participate in the state cross country meet as an individual runner.

Ramos, finished in 6th place during the regional meet in Lubbock on Monday. She clocked a time of 12:15:70. She is the third student in the history of the Blue Devils program to qualify as an individual runner at state competition.

“She has continued to show growth throughout the season by improving her time every meet,” said Coach Alonzo Samaniego. “Ivett ran that same course just a month ago at the Lubbock Invitational meet and improved her time by 49 seconds. She has been our number one runner throughout the season. I am very proud of all her accomplishments but I am more proud of all the hard work she puts in on a daily basis.”

The Lady Devils finished in 5th place with 164 points.

“We lost four girls from the previous state qualifying team and still managed to be within 7 points of making it to the state meet,” said Samaniego.

“We had one senior, one junior, three sophomores, and two freshmen running. I am very proud of all the hard work these girls put in. Losing all that experience from last year (due to graduations) did not stop the girls from getting to the regional meet.”

“The Lady Devils finished as district champions for the second consecutive year and we will look to keep it going for the years to come. Every year our goal will be to win the region and continue qualifying for the state meet where our ultimate goal will be to bring home a medal.”
