EL PASO – While many residents of El Paso, Far West Texas, and New Mexico were commemorating the men and women who died in military service for the United States, area Border Patrol Agents were busier than ever taking into custody more than 2,200 undocumented migrants from Central America who entered the country illegally, according to a Border Patrol news release.
Memorial Day was the busiest recent day of enforcement activity for El Paso Sector Border Patrol Agents during the ongoing influx. The 2,200 apprehensions included two large groups and many smaller ones.
The busy day began in the boot heel of New Mexico with a large group of over 200 immigrants apprehended near the Antelope Wells Port of Entry just after 2am.
A second large group was one of the largest in El Paso Sector thus far with over 430 people. This group crossed the border just west of Bowie High School in El Paso at around 7am.
By the end of the day, the El Paso Sector agents had apprehended more than 2,200 persons, with 1,850 of those being taken into custody in the geographic area between El Paso’s Executive Boulevard and Midway Street.

On Monday, Alpine agents apprehended a group of 11 illegal aliens hiding in a culvert along U.S. Highway 90, approximately 20 miles east of Alpine, Texas. After further investigation it was revealed that one of the 11 individuals, identified as Simon Gonzalez-Munoz, a 44-year-old male from Mexico, was previously convicted on May 27, 2003, of indecency with a child, sexual contact/aggravated sexual assault. Gonzalez-Munoz was convicted in Brownfield, Terry County, Texas and sentenced to six years confinement. Gonzalez-Munoz, was previously deported in March 2009.
Gonzalez-Munoz’, previous order of removal will be reinstated. He will be charged with illegal reentry of a removed alien.
