AUSTIN – Kevin Bacon hasn’t been to Marfa in a while, but he was just talking about the town to his wife, director/actress Kyra Sedgwick, who is embarking on a cross-country trip.
“I was helping her with her tour route and she was thinking about some of the slides from Marfa,” said Bacon. “Yeah, I do miss it.”
Bacon was a regular fixture in Marfa when he spent weeks filming the TV show, I Love Dick, in 2016. Most residents have a story about a Bacon sighting, whether it was seeing him grab coffee at Frama or his surprise appearance at Marfa ISD’s end-of-year staff party where he donated $5,000 to the Marfa Education Foundation.
Emmy-winning director Jill Soloway brought Chris Kraus’ book to screen for eight episodes on Amazon Prime. The show is told through the eyes and mind of Chris, played by Kathryn Hahn, as she navigates her marriage to Sylvère (played by Griffin Dunne), her obsession with Dick (played by Bacon), her work and living in Marfa, where the show takes place.
I Love Dick wasn’t picked up for a second season, but Bacon received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Television Show – Comedy or Musical for his role.
“I was sad that that show didn’t go because I was really proud of it and I thought it was working really good,” said Bacon.
Bacon was recently in Austin for the ATX Television Festival, where he read the pilot of the unaired show Tremors, a spin-off from the 1990s film in which he starred. Bacon also walked the red carpet for the screening of his newest TV show, City on a Hill, a drama set in early 1990s Boston. He plays the outspoken and not-so-nice FBI agent Jackie Rohr opposite to Assistant District Attorney Decourcy Ward played by Aldis Hodge, who most Texans will recognized as Ray “Voodoo” Tatum on Friday Night Lights.
“I had been lining up to do a few different understated men who say very little, but have a certain kind of power like Dick, you know. Not a lot of words,” said Bacon. “Then I read this guy. Can’t stop talking. He’s just a complete blabbermouth.”
Bacon got the character the moment he heard this character’s voice.
“I think honestly when this came my way, I was just so grateful to have a gig like this because parts like this don’t come along that often,” said Bacon.
City on a Hill’s first episode is available to view for free on Showtime’s website sho.com, but the series premiere airs at 8pm on Sunday, June 16 on the Showtime channel.
