MARFA – On Friday, June 21 – the summer solstice, the longest day of the year – the Chinati Foundation will host an open viewing of Robert Irwin’s untitled (dawn to dusk) from 7-9pm. The viewing will be free and open to the public.
Robert Irwin’s untitled (dawn to dusk) was inaugurated in July 2016 after many years of planning by the artist. Configured in a Π shape on the footprint of the former hospital of Fort D.A. Russell, Irwin’s building-cum-artwork is divided into two halves, one light and one dark.
Walls of translucent, white or black scrim run the length of each long arm of the Π, capturing and refracting the light that enters from high east and west windows. In the short connecting arm, ranks of white and black scrim walls create a transition zone between the light and dark corridors.
Throughout the day, Irwin’s artwork offers an ever-changing experience of light, space, and the passage of time. The work represents the culmination of Irwin’s decades-long investigation of these perceptual phenomena.
The June 21 open viewing of Irwin’s artwork is a rare opportunity for visitors to experience it in just the way Irwin’s subtitle describes it – from dawn to dusk – on the longest day of the year.
