BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK – The Cottonwood Campground reopened this week, after shutting down in late May due to the Castolon fire. The blaze burned over 900 acres in the national park this spring, and charred fencing and pipes at the Cottonwood Campground’s perimeter. The fire initially shut down the Castolon Historic District, Cottonwood Campgrounds, and portions of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive.
Park Ranger Jennette Jurado said the park has repaired the damage, and that the grounds are now open and available, but the Castolon Historic District is still closed to access. Longtime visitors are anticipating potential plans for the restoration of the historic district, but no announcements have been made yet. Jurado said for now, everything else should be available—come and explore. All the paved roads and dirt roads are currently open at Big Bend National Park.
