MARFA – The West Texas Wind Track Club is slowly working to fundraise back the $2,800 that was allegedly stolen from its coffers last month by one of the club’s officers. Club President Josh Kelly said their Wednesday brisket fundraiser successfully raised almost $1,700, over half of what was lost, and a bake sale on the side added to those numbers.
Kelly said a few students felt affected by the theft, noting that his own son had been close to, and coached by, Craig Jex Hawker, the man who allegedly stole the funds. Despite the hurdle, the team is feeling optimistic about next week’s state competition, which runs from Thursday to Sunday.
Kelly said that community members who want to support the club can best contribute by direct donation to one of the officers: Kelly, Treasurer Brenda Bentley and Secretary Cricket Peña.
“If it’s via check, that’s preferable because there’s a paper trail on that one,” said Kelly.
