Border Patrol agent arrested on child abuse charge

ALPINE — Authorities last week arrested a Border Patrol agent on alleged child abuse charge.

On Thursday afternoon, Garrett Morgan Smith was arrested for alleged aggravated sexual assault of a child, the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office stated on social media. The case is under investigation, according to the statement.

In an emailed statement to The Big Bend Sentinel, Customs and Border Protection said Smith was off-duty at the time of his arrest.

“CBP is fully cooperating with the investigation and takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and will support the Sheriff’s Office in their investigation,” the statement reads. “In addition, CBP will be conducting an internal investigation.”

“Since this case involves an ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.”
