Marfans come together to honor Veteran’s Day

MARFA — On Monday, Marfa community members, including approximately 30 veterans, came together at Marfa schools to commemorate Veteran’s Day and thank veterans for their service.

The event was organized by Marfa schools, Veterans Affairs, and the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office. Among the attendees were Marfa ISD Superintendent Oscar Aguero, who served for six years in the Army.

Being a veteran myself, it’s nice that we honor veterans,” Aguero said in a follow-up phone call on Wednesday. “It should be more than one day that we do it.”

Marfa’s National Honor Society emceed and made announcements at the event. “One of the things I really loved about this year is that most of the event was student-led,” Aguero said.

Border Patrol served as color guard for the event — a role they’ve reportedly filled for about five years.

As in years past, the school also invited a parent veteran to speak.

This year’s guest speaker was parent Amber Serrano, a state trooper who spent four years in the Army, including at Fort Bliss in El Paso and Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.

Serrano said teachers asked her to speak. “I have three girls,” she said. “I wanted to show them they can do anything.”

Serrano said she also wanted to honor veterans for everything they do — including spending long periods of time away from their families while on assignment. She thanked the school for doing a great job with the event.

As the event wound down, Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez served a variety of barbeque, including brisket, sausage, potato salad and mac and cheese.

Dominguez, who served in the National Guard before joining the sheriff’s office, said the event this year had a good turnout. He, too, thanked veterans for their service.
