ALPINE, Texas — The board of directors of the Bechtel Fund met over the weekend and awarded $6,000 in book grants to students from Presidio, Alpine, Marfa and Fort Davis attending Sul Ross State University in the Spring 2020 semester.
A credit of $500 for each student listed below has been set up at the Sul Ross Bookstore, to help students acquire the necessary reading materials for their education.
From Presidio ISD, Jonathan Carrasco, Nathalia Melendez, Yasmine Chonel Barron, Raul A. Rios, Stephanie B. Rivera, Shelby Rojo and Gerardo Levario Sanchez received grants.
Zenayda Lara from Fort Davis ISD and Kendra M. Serano from Marfa ISD were named recipients, and Samantha Osiris Sanchez, Chani E. Spear and Abigail Victoria Vizcaino from Alpine ISD rounded out the award winners.
The Bechtel book grant is awarded twice a year by a selection committee composed of John Ferguson, Matt Walter, Caroline Fox, Bianca Gonzalez and Robert Alvarez.
The Bechtel Fund is a charitable corporation that was established and incorporated in 1993 by George Bechtel of Alpine to award a monetary grant for undergraduate Sul Ross students who graduated high school or got a GED from the tri-county area. Eligible students must be currently, fully enrolled at Sul Ross and meet the criteria of having already completed 24 college semester hours, having a GPA of 3.0 or more and being in good standing with the university.
