Presidio school teams on winning streak

PRESIDIO — The Presidio school girls basketball teams have been on a winning streak this past week, thanks to what Alonzo Samaniego, a coach at Presidio ISD, calls great defensive play.

Last Friday, the Lady Devils traveled to Kermit, where the varsity girls won with a score of 59-32. The results gave the team an overall season record of 12-8, with an undefeated 1-0 record in the district.

Samaniego called it a “great defensive game” in which players “forced a lot of turnovers and converted on offense.” Crystal Barriga scored 15 points, while Alexa Baeza scored 11 points and Nathalia Montemayor scored 10.

The junior varsity black team also reigned victorious, winning with a score of 35-22. Emely Viramontes scored the most points, with 14, while Sheila Ornelas followed close behind with 9.

The junior varsity blue team, meanwhile, lost a tight game, with a score of 23-24.

Presidio ISD continued their winning streak Tuesday, with games in Anthony.

The varsity girls played another “great defensive game,” defeating the Anthony Wildcats by a whopping 55-18 margin, Samaniego said. Every Presidio player scored at least 2 points. Alexa Baeza again took the lead, with 11 points, while Nathalia Montemayor earned 9 and Alondra Proano earned 7. That left the team with an overall score of 13-8 overall and 2-0 for the district.

The junior varsity black team also cleaned house against Anthony’s junior varsity, with an overall game score of 51-12. Mia Marquez earned 13 points, and Ysel Castro earned 12.

Next up are home games in Presidio against the Crane Lady Birds. Junior varsity girls go first, at 5 p.m., followed by a varsity girls game at 6:30.
