MARFA — The Marfa Lady Horns basketball team on Tuesday brought their overall district score to 4-2 after defeating Balmorhea 36-29 in what coach Linda Ojeda said was a thrilling game.

Freshman forward Alexis Gonzalez and senior guard Isabella Morales carried the offense, Ojeda said, scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. Both women scored “critical shots” that helped keep Marfa in the lead.

Tais Chanez, meanwhile, had a career high for steals, with 11 steals and two other points. With the game, Lady Horns have second place in the district. Their next game is against Fort Davis on Tuesday, January 28, at 6 p.m.

In other sports news, the Shorthorns played against the visiting Balmorhea Bears on Tuesday night. It was a back-and-forth game, but the Shorthorns “came up short in the final seconds of play,” Ojeda said. The final score was 41-45.

Jared Fuentez, a senior, was Marfa’s leading scorer in that game, with 14 points and several rebounds. Dedrick Camps scored 10 points, while Bryan Torres and Ethan Sainz both scored 7.

The game left the Shorthorns with a 2-3 district record. To have a chance at stealing the third playoff spot, they’ll need to win the rest of the district schedule. Marfa heads to Fort Davis for a game on Tuesday, January 29. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
