PRESIDIO — The Presidio girls sports teams have mostly kept up their winning streak with games in Presidio and Alpine.
The only exception was Friday, when the Lady Devils hosted the Crane Lady Birds. “We didn’t play like we usually do,” said Alonzo Samaniego, a Presidio ISD coach. “We had a lot of turnovers, which led to most of Crane’s scoring.”
The team was down by 20-28 at the end of the third quarter. Players “fought hard and came back,” but “in the end it was too much to overcome,” Samaniego said. Presidio lost 36-38.
Things turned around Tuesday in Alpine, where the varsity girls defeated the Lady Bucks, 46-31. They were down 11-15 at halftime but turned up the defense in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Bucks by 15-11 in the fourth.
Crystal Barriga was the main scorer in that game, with 18 points. Next up were Alejandra Valles (11 points) and Nathalia Montemayor (6), giving the team a record of 3-1 for the district and 14-9 overall.
The junior varsity girls team also defeated the Alpine JV team, 43-26. Sheila Ornelas cleaned up with 12 points scored, followed by Iliana Morales (10 points) and Ysel Castro (10).
Next on the agenda are games with Tornillo, which Presidio hosts this Friday. Varsity girls start at 6:30 pm.
