All of us in the Sul Ross family are outraged by the wanton use of violence that took George Floyd’s life on May 25, 2020. We join today with grieving Americans from all walks of life who strongly believe in justice and human rights.
Sadly, we also recognize that Mr. Floyd’s death was not an isolated case. Deeply-rooted racism and violence against people of color continue to be our reality.
Our challenge now, as a college community that values diversity, is to be an agent for change. We must focus more fully on the efforts of our own SRSU Diversity and Inclusion Committee. We must embrace the values outlined in our Strategic Plan: diversity and inclusiveness, ethics and integrity, leadership and service, and personal connection. Indeed, those values must become personal for each of us.
As President of SRSU, I am committed to support, advocate for and empower all members of our university community — and I ask everyone to make the same commitment with me. As we reflect on these events, their repercussions at the national level, and their ramifications here at home among our own Lobo family, let us join together to take a stand against racism and injustice on our campuses and in our country.
