LAJITAS –Voices From Both Sides brings another year of uniting Americans and Mexicans in the Rio Grande this Saturday. The seventh annual event, also referred to as Fiesta Protesta, starts at noon Saturday, May 11, near Lajitas and Paso Lajitas. There will be swimming, dancing and music performances on both side of the Rio Grande. Food and drink are not provided, so attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and plenty of water to drink.
The first Voices event was held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 after 9/11 when the government closed informal crossings at Lajitas, Boquillas, Redford, and Candelaria.
This year, event founder Jeff Haislip posted on the event’s Facebook page that he met with the Border Patrol for lunch last Friday in Lajitas where they asked him to share a small statement:
“It is unlawful for persons to enter into the United States at this location. Persons who enter may be subject to prosecution under U.S. Federal Statutes, 8 U.S.C. 1324, 1325, 1326: 19 U.S.C. 123.1(a), 1459.
offered $270,000. The board voted last month to sell the house to Hopper and, if that did not go through, to offer it to the other bidder.
Hopper operates an art gallery in the “Deep Ellum” district in Dallas and, while he was not clear with his plans, he said in March he may turn the property into income property like a house.
He and the district have come to terms to complete the sale.
“I already have a house near Mar-fa,” he said. “It will not be a gallery. I have one in Dallas and I already know what a money drain that can be.”
The board also approved a lease of new office space at 106 and 108 O’Reilly in Presidio and will move out of the existing Building at 803 West O’Reilly in June. The board also approved up to $12,000 for moving expenses and equipment for the new office.
The new space will be in two of four retail units in one building.
