ALPINE – After municipal elections were held across Texas on Saturday, the only change in all of Brewster County will happen on the Alpine City Council, and it’s not because of the election.
Betty Fitzgerald will take the Ward Three seat her husband, Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald had held for six years. He was limited to three two-year terms by the City Charter but no one filed to oppose her.
Only one place was contested on the city council. Incumbent Maria Curry held off challenger and former city council member Angie Bermudez 88 to 38 to serve a second term. Bermudez held the seat for three terms ending in 2015.
Curry is a stay at home mom who is home schooling her children.
The returns are unofficial until they are canvassed, but County Elections Administrator Lora Nussbaum said the 126 persons who voted both early and on election day in the Curry-Bermudez race were only 14.2 percent of the 885 registered voters in the ward.
In the other city council race, Rick Stephens was unopposed in his re-election to his second term.
Two school board races were uncontested. Justin Cross in District Five and Mary McCallister in District Seven filed for re-election. With no other candidates, the election was canceled.
Elsewhere, Marathon, Terlingua and San Vicente in the National Park had their elections in November.
