Spitzer

On Tuesday, July 2, 2019 with her family by her side, Estefana Mendias Spitzer, 96, of Stanton, Texas and formally of Marfa, Texas closed her eyes to her earthly home and opened them to a victorious heavenly homecoming.

Praying of the Most Holy Rosary was held on Friday, July 5, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa, Texas. Mass of Christian Burial followed the Rosary service and burial was at the Merced cemetery. Fr. John Paul Madanu served as Celebrant.

Serving as pallbearers were: Bobby Spitzer, Josh Rodriguez, Allen Molinar, James Molinar, Jose Apolinar and Martin Acosta.

Estefana was born on October 22, 1922 in Marfa, Texas to Apolonio Mendias and Esther Borunda Mendias. She was a homemaker and worked at the Borunda’s Café, a family business, for many years. She was a graduate of Marfa High School.

Estefana was blessed with two children and a wonderful life of serving God and her community. She was further blessed with musical ability to play the church organ for St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the local community. Estefana served the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Guadalupanas by serving as Vice President.

She enjoyed working with her hands, stitching and making patchwork quilts, cooking and sewing. She would welcome anyone with open arms and love them as if they were her own.

Preceding Estefana in death are her parents and three brothers; Domingo, Henry and Benjamin Mendias as well as three sisters; Paula Delgadillo, Mary Alice Torres and Josephine Rodriguez.

Those left to honor and cherish the memory of Estefana are her children Paul Spitzer and wife Ruth of Alpine and her daughter JoAnn Carrillo and husband of Stanton, Texas. She is also survived by several grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great, great grandchildren.
