ALPINE – The Alpine Cowboys baseball team needs the community’s help. This weekend, the team is hosting an exhibition game and a hamburger sale as well as collecting donations to cover an unexpected loss in revenue.
The Trinidad Triggers baseball team, from Trinidad, Colorado, forfeited the last five games of the Pecos League season due to unforeseen circumstances. Because of the forfeiture, the Cowboys clinched first place in the Mountain Division and will have the home field advantage for the playoffs that start next week.
However, Kristin Cavness, Alpine Cowboys general manager, told the Big Bend Sentinel that those cancelled games will cost the team close to $20,000 in lost revenue. These lost funds usually pay the bills and staff.
Cavness said the exhibition game against La Clica, an ensemble of Alpine players put together by Chayo Gonzales, will keep the Cowboys warmed up for the upcoming playoffs. It starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, at Kokernot Field and is free to attend. Rumor has it that the members of La Clica consists of former Alpine High School Bucks baseball players, college players and maybe some “old-timers.” The concession stand will be open.
There will also be a hamburger sale starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday in front of the field. For $8, people can get a hamburger, chips and a drink.
