Marfa student dies in rollover accident

MARFA — An 11-year-old boy was killed August 22 in a rollover accident between Marfa and Alpine.

The single-vehicle accident happened shortly before 6 a.m. on U.S. Route 90 near Paisano Pass, less than ten miles east of Marfa. The driver, William Dodson, swerved to avoid an unknown number of deer, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The maneuver caused Dodson’s 2000 Ford Explorer to roll an unknown number of times before landing in the westbound lane, DPS said. William Dodson was taken to the hospital and discharged. His son, Zechariah Dodson, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are investigating the accident and plan to release a full crash report around September 5.

They hope to determine whether Zechariah was wearing his seat-belt when he was ejected. His father, William, said Zechariah was wearing one, according to DPS.
