Marfa-produced play goes to Austin Film Festival

The Austin Film Festival is featuring “ILSA,” a one-woman play by acclaimed poet and novelist William Benton, to be produced as a performed reading on Saturday, October 26, at 3:15 p.m., at the Hideout Theater in Austin. It is one of a handful of works to be honored by invitation at the festival. “ILSA” stars award-winning Irish actress Kate O’Toole, and is directed by Richard Maxwell of New York City Players. Benton’s play was originally workshopped at the Crowley Theater in December 2019, and is produced by Joey Benton and Carolyn Pfeiffer.

“ILSA” tells the story of what happened after the film “Casablanca,” from Lisbon on. It is the story of Ilsa Lund’s life with Victor Laszlo in America, where they remain at the end of the Second World War. The play is an exploration of the truths and limits of love (and the inescapable presence of Rick Blaine), set against a backdrop of postwar America in some of its finer days

Known as a “writers festival,” the Austin Film Festival furthers the art and craft of storytelling by inspiring and championing the work of writers, filmmakers, and all artists who use written and visual language to tell a story.

Reservations are recommended as seating is limited.
