MARFA — One talented runner at Marfa schools is joining a statewide cross country team.
Ummi Chanez, a freshman, was chosen for the 2019-2020 Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State Cross Country Team, the Marfa Shorthorns stated on social media.
The team pulls from runners from across the state. Chanez is one of 35 runners who were selected from a field of hundreds, according to the post.
In a statement to The Big Bend Sentinel, Marfa ISD Superintendent Oscar Aguero said he was “extremely proud of Ummi,” adding that she is “a great ambassador for Marfa ISD.”
Over the past five years, Marfa has been represented at four state cross country meets. But in that time, Chanez is the first Marfa student to join the all-state team, Aguero said.
