MARFA — With wins against Alpine and Presidio junior girls varsity teams and a 2-3 record so far this season, Marfa basketball is in full swing, Marfa ISD coach Linda Ojeda said.
Marfa girls basketball has so far played six games. They’ve lost to Presidio twice and to Buena Vista, with Buena Vista defeating Marfa 13-54 on Tuesday night.
So far, the Lady Horns’ leading scorers have been freshman forward Alexis Gonzalez and sophomore post player Brianna Sanchez, Ojeda said.
In Shorthorn boys news, the team scored a dramatic, one-point win against the Iraan Braves, with a final score of 40-39. Marfa player Dedrick Campos scored the winning shot with just three seconds left in the game. Ethan Sainz was the highest scorer, with 19 points made.
The girls play Juarez Academy Thursday (today) at 11:00 a.m., and the boys will play Van Horn at 3:30 p.m. in El Paso. Both squads will also compete at the Immanuel Christian Invitational Tournament this weekend.
The junior high basketball will also host its first home basketball games today, with games against Fort Davis in the Marfa Shorthorn Gym at 5:00 p.m. (for girls) and 6:00 p.m. (for boys).
