MARFA — The Marfa Nutrition Center is now offering meals seven days per week. The expanded home-delivery program comes after more than $20,000 in funding from Meals on Wheels America and the Permian Basin Area Foundation was awarded to the center over the last week.
For now, weekend meals will be shelf-stable options and delivered with Friday’s hot meal. However, city administration is working on a plan to utilize local restaurants to ensure senior citizens are getting hot meals every day of the week.
“We’re thrilled to be able to offer this new service,” said Community Services Director Mandy Roane. “The funds from our generous donors and the amazing staff and volunteers at the Nutrition Center are reasons we’re able to do this; I’m excited to get this off the ground and see how far we can take it.”
The new meal plan comes after COVID-19 concerns caused the in-house senior meal program to be temporarily closed and all seniors switched to home delivery. Nutrition Center Director Ed Cobos also worked to add almost 20 new clients to the list, bringing the total meals served daily to 107.
“The meals we deliver each day go to some of our most vulnerable citizens, and we want to do whatever we can to keep them as healthy as possible,” said Roane. “We’re hopeful our new plan will keep them fed and safe through the pandemic.”
