MARFA – In the age of coronavirus, Marfa Live Arts will continue its annual tradition of providing summer activities for Marfa’s young students, partnering with MISD for the 8th annual Camp Summer Shake Up; only this summer all activities will be online. All classes are free at: campsummershakeup.org
Camp Summer Shake Up begins on Monday, June 1 with four days of Marfa Live Arts’ Hip-Hop Dance Camp with Fort Worth-via-New York dance instructor Gabby Cunningham. An award-winning choreographer, Cunningham teaches in dance studios in Fort Worth, where she is currently studying Modern Dance at TCU’s School for Classical & Contemporary Dance. This beginning hip hop course is fun and active, and it has age appropriate music allowing for the whole family to learn some moves and dance.
Week two of Camp Summer Shake Up runs from June 8-11. Marfa Live Arts will host Choir Camp with St. Mark’s (Houston) Director of Children’s Music Anna Teagarden. Anna and her daughters, Kate and Leah, will provide a series of catchy songs and vocal techniques for Pre-K to sixth grade students. Teagarden’s a world-renowned singer who was scheduled to lead the Marfa Live Arts’ Spring Sing Choral Festival, which was postponed due to COVID-19.
This summer, Marfa Live Arts will also present the work of Marfa High School winning playwrights with a twist: all plays will be acted over the radio during the Radio Plays in the Time of Corona. Dates to be announced.
